    Should i update my firmware?

    Should i update my firmware?

it seems to be a question that many people ask themselves when they first get their iphones.

the short answer is..... it depends.

there is no definate yes or no. it all depends on what you want to get out of your iphone experence.
    __________JAILBREAKING__________
one of the main questions is do you want to jailbreak your iphone?
(jailbreaking is when you modify the stock iphone firmware so you can put custom apps and things that arent endorsed by apple. an example of this is the iphone 3g doesnt have a built in video recorder, but by jailbreaking you can add a video recorder app.)

in my oppinion you get the most out of your iphone by jailbreaking
so if you would like to do so you need to check which firmware you have (settings, general, about, version) and see if a jailbreak is avalable for that version, you can do so by googleing it or checking other posts on the forum.

apple has this cat and mouse game with hackers and makes updates which fix the hacks that jailbreak your iphone. so if you want to jailbreak you shouldnt update unless you make sure that there is a known jailbreak for the latest firmware.

    __________UNLOCKING________

the iphone is a cool device, the only down side is that your carrier doesnt have the iphone. but if your carier is a gsm network (sim cards) then you are in luck! you might be able to unlock your cool iphone and use it with your carrier! when looking for unlocks you need to be even more careful with updating the firmware than with jailbreaks alone.
if you choose to unlock then you need to jailbreak first. then apply the unlock through different methods, not mentioned here.
with unlocks you need to make sure the unlock is compatable with the firmware you are on, and just because you can jailbreak your iphone under a firmware doesnt mean you can unlock it.
(this is because when you unlock a phone it works with a specific baseband which is the software in the phone related to sending your phone signal, when you update the firmware this basband is updated and the unlock no longer works with it until someone makes a hack that works with that baseband)

unlocks come less frequent then jailbreaks so NEVER update your firmware unless you are sure you can unlock it or you will be left with a phone you cant use.

    so to sum things up:
want to just jailbreak= dont update unless jailbreak is available
want to unlock = make sure unlock is available on firmware and able to jailbreak. NEVER update without checking
dont want to jailbreak or unlock= update normaly

for the latest updates on iphone jailbreaks or unlocks google search "iphone hacks"

hope you guys liked my first post and hope it helped!
