Thread: 3G os3.0 Jailbreak & unlock help

1st post!! Hi all!

I got hold of a cheap iphone 3G. it currently has os 3.0. i would like to upgrade the os, jailbreak and unlock the phone.

i am a complete noob! can anyone help point me in the direction of a 'step by step, even a dumb ass could do this' guide to upgrading, jailbreaking and unlocking your 3G?

Hi and welcome.

Ok firstly you want to upgrade to the latest OS which is 4.0.1. You can do this via iTunes.

Once updated load up safari on your phone and browse to the following website. www.jailbreakme.com and follow the simple instruction.

Now for the unlock thats pretty simple too you just need to load up cydia and add the following repo to cydia, repo666.ultrasn0w.com.

Once you do that search for ‘ultrasn0w’ ( thats a bolded zero not the letter o )

Install ultrasn0w reboot your iphone and thats all there is to it.

Ok! ive started!

done the update bit via itunes...

my 3G now displays a - usb pointing at itunes, no service where the signal bars should be and 'slide for emergency'
itunes is saying - the sim card inserted does not seem to be supported.

even with my router/wifi on theres no option to get to safari to do the next step.

any ideas? please help!

erm... i may have made things worse...

in my impatience i turned to the internet for advice (i know, i know. foolish!) i saw a site that promised to get me past the emergency call screen. it involved downgrading to os3.1.2 and using redsn0w to jailbreak. i followed the instructions to the letter and... still stuck on the emergency call screen, itunes still saying unsupported sim.

i promise im not gonna touch my iphone untill someone who knows what there doing answers!

im out all day, but will eagerly check tonight!

What carrier is the phone with originally?

i know the guy i got it off had it when only o2 (uk) had the iphone deal. so it must be o2. im on vodafone. the iphone was working on vodafone before my feeble efforts. but i needed to upgrade the os.

any ideas?

Grab yourself an o2 sim card you`ll get one for like £1 in any corner shop. The phone will activate then jailbreak and unlock with O2 sim in the phone then you will be able to use you voda sim. My bad I shoulda pointed this out before hand, I apologise.

Edit: Did your downgrade workout ok? Be extremly careful when upgrading to iOS4 as Apple has released firmware 4.0.2 which is not jailbreakable at the moment.

as for the downgrade, i followed the instructions to the letter. think it went well! ill get a o2 sim and upgrade to 4.0.1 (err... how would i upgrade to 4.0.1 if itunes is now on 4.0.2?).
